Today, in Hull Minster, there was a civic funeral service for former Lord Mayor & Honorary Alderman, David Gemmell OBE. During his time as Lord Mayor, David and his wife, Moira became firms friends of Stepney Primary School, visiting every year for different events. David's connections with the school go even further back. At one point, many years ago, the school faced closure as the large Victorian roof was in a bad state of repairs. David heard the pleas of parents, pupils and staff and ensured the roof was repaired and the school kept open. It is great to think that, as well as being the man who was instrumental in bringing 'The Deep' to Hull, David was also interested in preserving old and established important buildings. In one of the tributes in today's service, Councillor Daren Hale reminded the congregation of these aspects of David's life. Both David and his late wife genuinely loved coming into Stepney to see the work that our pupils were doing. They are both greatly missed.
